What tax registrations are available?

In most circumstances, a business may require the following:

  • ABN Registration - An ABN is a unique number that identifies your business. An ABN is used to interact with government agencies, departments, and other businesses.
  • TFN Registration – A tax file number (TFN) is issued by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) for all individuals, companies, trusts and self-managed superannuation funds.
  • GST Registration – Goods and services tax (GST) is a 10% tax applied to most goods and services sold in Australia. When registered for GST, the business must collect GST from your customers and pay this to the ATO when required. You may be required to register for GST if your business has a GST turnover of $75,00 or more or you operate a non-profit organisation that has a GST turnover of $150,000 or more.

We can also arrange tax registrations for:

  • Companies
  • Trusts (Discretionary Trusts & Unit Trust)
    • ABN Number
    • TFN Number
    • Register for GST
    • 24/7 Registration

Do I need to register an ABN?
Not everyone needs an ABN. An ABN is not compulsory; however it makes it easier to keep track of business transactions for tax purposes. You will need an ABN to be registered for GST in order to claim GST credits for any GST you have paid for goods and services you have used in your company. Please note, if you are not entitled to an ABN, your application may be refused; you will be provided an explanation from the ATO as to their refusal. If you are unsure on whether you require an ABN, please seek independent legal advice.
How long does it take to register my business for ABN/GST/ TFN?
The ABN application form usually takes around 10 minutes to complete. Once your application has been submitted to the ABR you normally receive your unique Australian Business Number within 10 minutes. If your registration is not issued immediately and requires manual review the ABR may take up to 28 days to issue the number. The reason for review may be because your identity cannot be confirmed or more information is needed.

How can I tack the progress of my tax registrations?
If your ABN is not issued immediately and requires manual review the ABR will be in touch with you within 28 days. Unfortunately, we are unable to contact the ABR on your behalf to follow up on a lodged application- only the authorised contacts or the associates can do so. We do however, have our experienced incorporation specialists review your application before its finally submitted to the ABR to ensure problems with your application are resolved before lodgement.
What are the benefits of an ABN?
The ABN is a unique number that is used to identify your business to the government and the wider community. It can be used to: identify your business to others when you invoice and place orders, claim goods and services tax credits (GST), allow you to register a business name and Australian domain name.
What is the difference between an ABN and ACN?
Both an ABN & ACN are used to identify business structures registered in Australia. The main difference between the two is an ABN is a unique 9 digit number that is issued by the Australia Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) to identify companies registered under the Corporations Act as where an ABN relates to the identification of all kinds of business structures such as partnerships, sole traders, companies, trusts and other entities. An ABN is registered with the Australian Tax Office (ATO).
Does a corporate trustee require an ABN?
This will depend on whether the Corporate Trustee is carrying on or starting an enterprise. A Corporate Trustee may elect to carry on an enterprise in its own right as well as in its capacity as Trustee. If you are unsure as to whether a Corporate Trustee should apply for an ABN, please seek independent advice.
