Should I apply for an ABN?

a question in Company Registration

If you're thinking of starting a business in Australia, one of the first things you'll need to do is apply for an Australian Business Number (ABN).The ATO requires all businesses to have an ABN, and it's necessary for a number of important tasks, including:

  • registering for GST
  • claiming business allowances and deductions
  • quoting your ABN to customers

You can apply for an ABN through the our website. The application process is simple and straightforward, and you should receive your ABN within minutes provided ATO manual review is not required.

However, there are a few exceptions where you may not need an ABN. These include if you're:

  •  a sole trader with an annual turnover of less than $75,000

If you're not sure whether you need an ABN, the ATO website has more information on eligibility.
